After classicism around 1800 the fine arts developed in different directions. Romanticism in particular brought new content and corresponding forms. However, over time, forms of realism also emerged that depicted everyday life, even in poverty and the simple everyday.

Symbolism was more of a counter development, but so was the historical painting of the time, always with a bit of nostalgia for the past. In architecture, above all, neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic churches emerged; modernism proper had yet to catch its breath.

In the last three decades of the 19th century, however, true modernism developed strongly and precisely, especially in Impressionism. This brought a new way of looking and seeing, open-air painting was done with fleeting brushstrokes, and priceless works of art were created. It took a long time for people to get used to this classical modernism.
